DSP: what it can and cannot fix

Digital signal processing is powerful for crossover filters, equalisation, delay and protection. It cannot repair poor mechanics or a spatial cancellation.

Useful jobs

DSP can implement crossovers, parametric EQ, shelving filters, delay, polarity changes, limiters and protective high-pass filters with repeatable precision.

Know the limits

Boosting a deep room null wastes headroom and may increase distortion without improving the listening position. Likewise, DSP cannot create displacement capability that the driver does not have.

Measure, filter, verify

A sensible workflow is to measure the raw system, define the target, apply the minimum necessary processing and verify both on-axis response and behaviour around the crossover region.
